Langtou Village

Langtou Village is located at Tanbu Town. In the past, there was a large lake in the south of the village and the village was on a small hill near the lake, on which there were full of Lang grasses. As a result, the village was named Langtou Village. The village consists of three main areas, i.e. Eastern Langtou, Central Langtou and Western Langtou. Eastern Langtou is located next to Central Langtou and Western Langtou is separated from the other two villages by a small river called ¡°Deep Pool¡±. Both Eastern Langtou and Central Langtou are about 210 meters wide and the Western Langtou is about 170 meters wide. The surname of the villager is Huang. In the last years of the Southern Song Dynasty, the ancestors moved from Zhuji Lane of Nanxiong County to Shenshan Town in the northern suburban district of Guangzhou (presently Baiyun district). And in the 27th year of Emperor Zhizheng of Yuan Dynasty (A.D.1367), they moved to this area and set up the village. Currently the total population of the village has reached 3000 people. There is a large field in front of the village. There are 3 half-moon-shaped pools. The litchi trees, longan trees and banyan trees beside the pools and plenty of towering banyan trees and kapok trees embrace the village. A kapok tree and a banyan tree were planted by the 11th generation ancestor Le Xuan Gong. They have been 600 years old. The village has large farmland and a carp pond which connects to the Deep Pool in the west and the Bajiang River in the east. Thus it has natural, quiet, peaceful and harmonious environment.

The buildings in the village face south and have regular layout. They are well preserved and orderly arranged. The buildings occupy the area of more than 60 thousand sqm. Today, there are 388 well-preserved black brick buildings built in Ming and Qing Dynasty, including 34 ancestral halls, bookrooms and academies and 5 blockhouses and gateways. The buildings in the village are mainly ancestral halls and bookrooms. Most of them were built in Qing dynasty and some of them were built in Ming Dynasty. The general layout of the building is three rooms and three doors or three rooms and two doors. They have herringbone or wok ear gable and plaster carved bogu ridge or longchuan ridge. The buildings are well decorated by high quality stone carving, brick carving, wood carving and plaster carving. Youlan Ancestral Hall and Guyi Bookroom are the best examples. There are many famous scenery spots, such as Sheng-Ping-Ren-Rui Memorial Archway and Qingyun Bridge in the east of Langtou village, Jimo Tower and Huangyou former residence in the central area of Langtou village, and Jiezhi Pavilion in the west Langtou village. There are 18 existing ancient lanes which are 1.1 meters to 3.3 meters wide, separating the buildings on the both sides. The name of the lane is positively scribed on the top of the gateway. There are many famous lanes, such as Yongfuli, Yishanli, Renshouli, Tainingli, Fuxianli, Xihuali and Zhuoyuli in Western Langtou, Shenhuaili, Xingrenli, Anjuli and Jinguangli in the Central Langtou, and Shanqingli, Xinyuanli, Dunrenli, Yetangli, Guangdili, Sanyuanli and Jimolou Lane in the Eastern Langtou. In 2010, Langtou Village was selected as the Characteristic Ancient Villages in Guangzhou. In 2012, it was awarded the title of "Historic and Cultural Village in Guangdong Province".
